More About the Portland Maine Area

Portland's origins can be traced back to a larger metropolis known as "Old Falmouth," established after the 1690 raid. This bustling urban center encompassed present-day Portland, Westbrook, Cape Elizabeth, South Portland, and the then-located city of Falmouth. On October 18, 1775, Old Falmouth faced another assault as part of Britain's response to the colonies following the Battles of Lexington and Concord, with the Royal Navy bombarding the area.

Noteworthy figures such as poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and author Stephen King hail from Portland. While King still holds a residence in his home state, splitting his time between Florida and the city of Bangor.

South Portland boasts the renowned Maine Mall, the largest commercial, retail, and office complex north of Boston. The suburb's population spikes from 23,000 to between 60,000 and 80,000 when the mall is open.

An annual highlight in downtown Portland is the Old Port Festival, inaugurated in 1973 and now Maine's largest one-day event. Originally scheduled for the first Sunday of June, since 2010, it has been moved to the second Sunday, historically a drier day, featuring live music, street performances, and local delicacies.

The iconic "Italian sandwich" finds its roots in Maine, crafted by Giovanni Amato, a Portland baker, in 1902. This early iteration of subs and hoagies is a loaded surprise with boiled ham, tomatoes, olives, onions, green peppers, and American cheese, drenched in a blend of salt, oil, and pepper. Delizioso!

In 2009, Portlanders collaborated to build the world's largest lobster roll, a colossal 61-foot, 9 1/2-inch creation packed with 4 gallons of Miracle Whip and 48 pounds of lobster meat. However, this record was surpassed by Canadian groups constructing rolls exceeding 70 feet, sparking a debate over the true record-breaker.

Despite playing in Boston, the Red Sox enjoy widespread popularity throughout New England. To honor this, the minor-league Portland Sea Dogs feature a 37-foot replica of Fenway's "Green Monster" wall in their outfield, affectionately dubbed the "Maine Monster" or should we say "monstaah"?
